The Clean Air Campaign

Mission

The Clean Air Campaign is a not-for-profit organization that works to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality through a variety of voluntary programs and services, including free employer assistance, public information and children's education. The organization focuses on both congestion and air quality because they are linked — vehicle emissions contribute to smog formation.

Formed in 1996 by government, business, civic, health, environmental and educational organizations, The Clean Air Campaign serves as a clearinghouse for a multitude of organizations that have programs in place to address traffic congestion and air pollution. Collectively they work with more than 650 employers in the region to mitigate traffic congestion and improve air quality.

Funding for The Clean Air Campaign is provided by U.S. Department of Transportation Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds. A twenty-percent match comes from business and government sponsorships

Service Area

The Clean Air Campaign serves the 13-county nonattainment area, which encompasses Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale counties.

Services Offered

The Clean Air Campaign offers a variety of programs and services to employers, employees and individuals throughout metro Atlanta, while also serving as the regional clearinghouse for information and education.

Programs and services include:

- Free employer program assistance to aid employers in setting up commute options and other smog-reduction programs, including car and vanpooling, teleworking and transit pass programs.

- Marketing the 1-87-RIDEFIND regional rideshare database to employers, employees and other residents of the 13-county area.

- Financial incentive programs for commuters to encourage the use of carpooling, vanpooling and transit.

- A regional toll-free call center (1-877-CLEANAIR) staffed to answer questions, provide tools and resources and connect callers with the appropriate employer service representative.

- A web site, cleanaircampaign.com, that offers downloadable tools such as vanpool sign-up forms, teleworking fact sheets, and 1-87-RIDEFIND and Guaranteed Ride Home sign up forms.

- A public information campaign that includes mass advertising, public relations, speakers bureau and community outreach.

- A regional awards program, The PACE Awards, to recognize outstanding employer-based programs.

- Distribution of Smog Alert notifications on behalf of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

- Two children's education programs: A 30-minute in-school assembly program featuring The Clean Air Campaign mascot, BAIR, the Better Air Bear; and statewide air quality curriculum developed in partnership with GA Tech for grades 4-8 (scheduled to launch this year), which will include lesson plans for teachers and conforms to the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum guidelines.

Highlights

In 2002, The Clean Air Campaign instituted new programs and services in its role as the regional TDM coordinating organization. It will now provide regional financial incentives designed to entice more commuters to use vanpooling, carpooling and transit. The organization has also developed a financial support program for and closer partnerships with the eight area Transportation Management Associations. This effort will result in more closely coordinated programs and services across the region; as well as more consistent marketing materials that capitalize on The Clean Air Campaign's high visibility and regional brand exposure. Between September 2000 and June 2002, the organization realized a more than 100% growth in employer partnerships, serving more than 350 employers in the region as of mid 2002.
